I took this photo from Carkeek Park in Northwest Seattle on a beautiful, 80-degree day in April. A few days later, we were getting pounded with snow.

Whale Watching

I had the opportunity to shoot this photograph when I lived in Seattle and took a whale watching tour with Island Adventures (who I would highly recommend if you are ever in the area). We had great luck that day and were able to track three gray whales near the south end of Whidbey Island for a few hours. We also saw sea lions, bald eagles, harbor seals, and a bunch of other wildlife.

Snoqualmie Falls

Snoqualmie Falls is east of Seattle, and a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. I hadn’t planned on going there this day, and didn’t have my tripod with me. Luckily, the observation deck has a lot of nice cross-support beams and I was able to stabilize my camera using those for this 2.5 second exposure.

Lake Austin Sunset

While the rest of the country is getting some horrible winter weather, it was nearly 80 degrees and beautiful in Austin today. The silver lining to my flight being cancelled and me being delayed in Texas for at least two more days is that I got to witness this beautiful sunset tonight.

This vantage point is on top of a cliff overlooking Lake Austin just off the Capital of Texas Highway. It is a short hike to reach the top, but the trail is not in very good shape. There are wonderful views of the Texas Hill Country from the top.

Teewinot Mountain is in Grand Teton National Park. I shot this photo from the deck of a ferry boat that was crossing Jenny Lake in the park, taking us to the trailhead to Hidden Falls.

Discovery Park

This photo was taken on a beautiful, cold morning in January. Discovery Park is on the site of the former Fort Lawton in Seattle. It has amazing views of the Olympic Mountains (pictured here in the background) and the Cascade Mountains, including Mount Rainier and Mount Baker, two of Washington’s stratovolcanoes. It is truly an amazing place to visit in the city.

There was extremely heavy snow this winter in the Cascades. The snowmelt has caused many rivers to overflow and there are a ton of seasonal streams. This is one of those seasonal streams running into the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie River. The charred log is likely from a campfire.

Mackinac Bridge at Twilight

This photo has been my most popular on Flickr for nearly one year. I took it last June from the campground at Straits State Park in St. Ignace, which is just across the bridge from the lower peninsula of Michigan. The color of the sky and water with the fog rolling in was unlike anything else I have ever witnessed.

Magnolia in the Washington Park Arboretum

This time of year is the prime time to take a stroll down Azalea Way in the Washington Park Arboretum. You’ll find lots of azaleas and rhododendrons, along with some late-blooming cherry, dogwood and magnolia trees. It really is a beautiful place to be.
